Five days after a disappointing defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies, the Celtics finally hit the court against the Detroit Pistons. The home side were without all-star Jayson Tatum, but that would not alter the outcome of this one. Payton Pritchard and Derrick White caught fire from beyond the arc, combining for seven threes in what would be a resounding victory at the TD Garden, 123-99.
It was a dismal first few offensive possessions for both sides, as they combined for just a single made shot on their first twelve attempts. However, Boston did eventually find some rhythm offensively and ended the first quarter on a 19-6 run. It was Luke Kornet’ addition to the game that sparked his teams run, Kornet had a huge impact in just 12 minutes of playing time off of the bench, he scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
The second period was a continuation of Boston’s late first quarter dominance, as Boston found it easy to score against a weakened Detroit defence. Jaylen Brown had a very interesting night; he struggled shooting the ball but was a huge difference maker for the Celtics. He hauled in nine rebounds and dished out six assists as well as being a +30 in his 29 minutes of action.
White and Pritchard then did their jobs to close the door on the Pistons in the second half. Pritchard in particular was exceptional in this one, as he became the first Celtic ever to record a stat line of 27 points, 4 rebounds and 10 assists (1 TOV) off the bench. The Oregon University alum certainly helped his case for sixth man of the year with this performance. In the end it was a comfortable victory for the Celtics as they cruised to a 123-99 win and moved to a 20-5 record for the season.
